Salt and Light Newsletter March 2021
Welcome to the ‘technology’ issue of Salt and Light. In this newsletter, we will explore how ever-developing technology and its associated media can influence how young people view relationships and sex.
Impact of pornography on young people
Although a digital divide still exists in our world (i.e. 1.1 billion people do not have access to electricity so could not charge a phone or tablet even if they had one), the ownership of mobile devices has grown exponentially in recent years.
What is grooming and how can RSE combat it?
So, what is grooming?
The NSPCC defines grooming as ‘when someone builds a relationship, trust and emotional connection with a child or young person so they can manipulate, exploit and abuse them.'
The Esteem Network - UK
There can be no doubt that the internet has brought new challenges to family life! Understandably, parents and carers can feel overwhelmed and uncertain of what practical steps to take to protect their children, especially when it comes to the easy accessibility of online pornography.
Bad communication?
"Please do not use email to send us any further information, it is not safe for us to receive it."
Introducing race identity sessions as part of the Esteem project
Events of the last year, such as the Black Lives Matter movement, and also the racist treatment of East Asians over the COVID-19 pandemic, have brought the importance of race to the forefront, and hopefully, it's here to stay.
What makes you happy?
What makes you happy?
You might think it’s as simple as a curry on a Friday night, a glass (or even a bottle!) of wine on an evening. But a curry on your own, a bottle of wine alone or even watching a sporting or cultural event means little if it is not shared.
#ChooseToChallenge gender based violence
International Women's Day is a global day celebrating women! This year their theme is 'Choose To Challenge.’
Imagine working in an industry where, if you even reported gender based violence, there would only be a 20% chance that the police would investigate?
